Unfortunately, dining GF abroad takes research and careful planning. I struck out the first night after eating pad thai cooked in soy sauce. I tried to explain my allergy to the waitress and chef, but there was a miscommunication along the way. After getting sick that evening, I knew that my protein bars could only sustain me for so long...
So I battled our hotel's spotty wi-fi access and finally found some restaurant possibilities!
My advice? Do this before leaving for your trip. It'll save time and make your experience more enjoyable. This was a last-minute birthday surprise for my sister (she's studying abroad there!), so I didn't have time to check the area ahead of time like I normally would.
Luckily, we came across a specialty restaurant called Maitrea. Tucked away down a little alley, it's an oasis for vegetarians, gourmands, and gluten free diners alike.
Maitrea's menu reads like a novel, with lovely details about each specially-created meal. Appetizers included roasted vegetables dressed in a homemade pesto sauce, fresh pea soup, and fresh guacamole with tortilla chips. Although it's hard to choose, entree highlights were customizable sushi and sweet potato stew. I had raw zuchini pasta, topped with fresh tomato sauce and crunchy sunflower seeds. The "raw" part weirded me out at first, but it was actually pretty good!
To be honest, Maitrea was a much-needed escape from the gluten-laden staples commonly found in Prague. Have you ever dined gluten free abroad?
