Benihana
One of my all-time favorite restaurants is Benihana. Any meal at the Japanese steakhouse makes for an exciting experience. Using teppanyaki-style cooking, chefs prepare food on a steel grill built right into your table top!
Naturally, Benihana uses soy sauce in many of its dishes. So I sadly gave up my hopes of eating there when I ditched gluten. But my incredible mom (knowing how much I loved the place) planned a surprise party for my birthday last week....
She explained our situation to the restaurant manager and offered to bring gf soy sauce as a replacement. The staff was extremely understanding and willing to accommodate us. Although I was hesitant about cross contamination, everything worked out perfectly! The chef cooked my meal separately on a clean grill and simply added tamari sauce instead of regular soy.
Before long, I was enjoying delicious hibachi chicken, grilled shrimp, and sesame veggies! (not to mention the humongous pile of fried rice on my plate) As you can imagine, I was a happy camper for the rest of the evening (:
The moral of this yummy story? Just ask. I had written off any possibility of dining at Benihana ever again. But now I know that with a little planning, I can still enjoy my favorite restaurant.
